May 27- June 19: Dance Africa Art Exhibit:::MoCADA::: and BAM

BAMart and the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Art (MoCADA) have partnered again to produce an intimate exhibition coinciding with the 2010 Dance Africa Festival. Curated by MoCADA's Director of Exhibitions, Kimberli Gant, the exhibition is centers its theme on the 2010 Dance Africa theme of "African Rhythms, American Echos." Works by artists Bara Diokhane, Duhirwe Rushmeda, Francis Simeni and Ezra Wube, who all originally hail from various nations on the African continent, will be featured. Each artist will choose a piece from their oeuvre and pair it with a piece from BAM's own collection of predominantly American artists. The idea of letting artists select their pairing was a conscious curatorial decision allowing the artists to create a personal dialog. Exhibition will be on view from May 27 - June 19, 2010

March 18th @ MoCADA: Book Signing and Discussion

Robert Farris Thompson: Eshu in the Americas

Yale Professor of African & African-American Art History, Yoruba practitioner and internationally acclaimed author, Dr. Robert Farris Thompson will present a dynamic lecture/discussion on the Yoruba deity Eshu (the Trickster).

Dr. Thompson will trace the deity's history from West Africa to the Americas and how the Yoruba religion is practiced today.

A Q&A will follow the presentation, and Dr. Thompson will sign his signature book Flash of the Spirit, along with a small reception.

Admission is $7 for non-members and free for MoCADA & Museum for African Art members.
The book is also available at MoCADA's store for $14.95.

Thursday, February 4: Gentrification Show Opening at MoCADA

Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts (MoCADA)

The opening is Feb 4th, 6pm-9pm, Free Admission.
"This reception will include a public art performance, a musical set by Brooklyn-based author and DJ, Rich Burroughs, the opportunity to meet the featured artists and a presentation by the exhibition's curator and Brooklyn native, Dexter Wimberly."

Group Show: The Gentrification of Brooklyn: The Pink Elephant Speaks

This exhibition, guest curated by Dexter Wimberly, will examine how urban planning, imminent domain, and real estate development are affecting Brooklyn’s communities and how residents throughout the borough are responding. The exhibition will include the works of several Brooklyn-based artists, as well as those who have been forced to relocate as a result of gentrification. In addition to works of art featured at MoCADA, there will be a schedule of public programs taking place throughout Brooklyn.

In addition, there will be a vignette of work on display from two local high schools (The Brooklyn Community Arts and Media High School and The Secondary School for Research) where students have been documenting the impact of gentrification on their neighborhoods over the past few years through photos and essays.
