"For everybody who thought grafitti started in the early 80's, Lava AKA StraightMan is here to set the records straight, man. LAVA 1&2 (he claimed 2 so no one else could - don't even think about the URL, cause he got that too) started writing in 1970 when we wasn't taking care of business as Supreme Commander of all Captains of the Black Spades in the borough of Manhattan or creating the first Hip Hop Flyers with PHASE 2. The Black Spades went on to become Zulu Nation and Graf blew up in the '80s but a whole generation of pioneers stayed in the shadows. LAVA'a Extravaganza gives a who's who of '70s writers a chance to shine."

May 14, 2010: Willoughby Windows v2.0:

Ad Hoc Art has lined up another spectacular roster of energetic artists from around the world, all highly regarded and ready to take their creative visions to another level. Artists include: C.Damage, Chris Mendoza & Pablo Power, Daryll Peirce, Faust, Hellbent, Jef Aerosol, Joe Iurato, Laura Lee, LogikOne, Ron English, Skewville, and Thundercut.


Windows transforms 13 vacant storefronts into a street level gallery, bringing art directly to the community. Over 14 well known artists, all with roots in street art, have contributed to this project, most creating site specific works. This network of visual experiences can help redefine how people visiting, working and living in Downtown Brooklyn think about and interact with their environment during a time of transition.

When: Friday, May 14th, 2-6pm, is the Opening Reception for the second installation of this acclaimed project.

Florian Gaag tells the story of a crew of four “writers” – David, Tino, Elyas und Achim – who observe the hierarchies, the values, the rules and the codes of the graffiti scene. Night after night they make off for the subway stations of the city, intent on leaving opulent images behind. But as another crew appears on the scene, and the four feel challenged, a creative battle ensues, one that will change the lives of these young people for ever.

We are confronted with life taken to the limit. Constantly on the edge of legality. Always on the run from the law. Urban space must be reclaimed. Friends are made and lost. Unbridled creativity and doing things for the sheer love of it are watchwords too.

Now through March 1: Graffiti Art Installation featuring work by Tats Cru

In the mid ’80s three teenagers began their artistic careers by creating subway graffiti. What began as an adolescent hobby and recognition tactic has evolved into a powerful, expressively iconic style that has brought TATS CRU to the forefront of the advertising mural industry. For over two decades TATS CRU has spearheaded the battle to change people’s perception of graffiti as an art through their respected work. In addition to the recognition they receive throughout the world as leaders in mural advertising and art, proof of TATS CRU’s success and the acceptance of graffiti as an art form can be found in their murals that adorn the walls of hospitals, museums, schools, businesses, and New York City institutions.

Admission to the exhibit is free and open to the public. DNA’s Main Entrance Gallery hours are 9am – 10pm Monday – Sunday.

This Weekend and for Black History Month: ARTCURIAN: "Artists Speaking for the Spirits" Mural Project/Exhibit and Artist Talks

"Artists Speaking for the Spirits," an exhibition of mural-sized paintings
by 40 artists of African ancestry. The show, thought to be the largest of its kind involving artists of color, is the premier project of ARTCURIAN, a groundbreaking movement in which artists and social agencies collaborate to deliver services to those in need.

The forty participating artists were invited and accepted the invitation because their works have consistently spoke to the power of art to heal, inspire, empower, define, convey sublime beauty, and positively transform the individual and community.

ARTCURIAN organizers introduced the healing power of art into the various therapeutic settings at the Addiction Research and Treatment Corporation and its affiliate, Urban Resource Institute (ARTC-URI).

- Opening weekend exhibition hours are: Fri, 11-5, Sat and Sun 3-6.
- Audiences will enjoy artist talks at 4 p.m. each Sunday in February. First up is "New Beginnings," a talk with artists new to mural-painting and discussion of great muralists of color in history.
- The remaining Black History Month schedule is: Thurs-Fri 11-5 and Sun 3-6.

Slide show and conversation with authors Sacha Jenkins and David Villorente and contributing artists TBA

Piecebook Reloaded is a tribute to the work of New York City’s graffiti community in its most private form—the sketches and drawings that fill hundreds of piecebooks that make their way through some of the greatest artists in the community. Unlike the more controversial forms of graffiti, which are also acts of vandalism, the art of the piecebook breaks no laws and puts no one in harm’s way.

Sacha and David, longtime Brooklynites who are deeply connected to local street art culture, will host a talk with some of the artists, which will include a sideshow presentation of many of the pieces and the chance to get books signed by graffiti impresarios.

Wanna witness hip-hop history in it's purest form? The Bronx Museum has all the artifacts you could ask for from Bambaata jackets to graf pieces, to films and photographs, and even live breakdancing if you swing by at the right time. This is a great exhibit for new comers to hip-hop as well as for the 'heads. Check it out while it's still up. The Museum's open Thursdays through Sundays and free on Fridays. It's worth the trip for Brooklynites, I promise!

This classic, definitive look at the birth of graffiti pairs Norman Mailer's fascinating 1974 essay with the internationally acclaimed Jon Naar's stunning photography. At this event, Jon Naar will present a slideshow of his photographs followed by a panel discussion on the topic of "Graffiti: Keeping the Faith! How one book challenged and changed the dialogue about the role of art in our society," with photographer Jon Naar, graffiti writer Chris Pape (a.k.a. Freedom) and Wicked Gary. Refreshments will be provided compliments of Bear Flag.
