"Come out and support libraries during the 24 hour We Will Not Be Shushed Read-In. This is going to be a unified libraries effort with readers and library workers from all three tri-li systems. We already have the full endorsement of Brooklyn Public Library and Queens Library administration. This is going to be a huge event in support of libraries.

We need your help! We need readers and we need supporters to come out and help out at the event. We will have a voice reading in front of the library for the full 24 hours. For that to happen it will take many voices to fill the time.

Together we can save our libraries and keep our library staff behind the desk where they belong.

"Join us for a discussion between Amiri Baraka, author of Black Music, the long-awaited reissue of the sequel to Amiri Baraka’s seminal work, Blues People, and , Norman Kelley, editor of R&B (Rhythm and Business): The Political Economy of Black Music. The program will include an open question-and-answer session and a book signing.

Black Music is a book about the brilliant young jazz musicians of the early 1960s: John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman, Cecil Taylor, Archie Shepp, Sun Ra, and others. This rich and vital collection is comprised of essays, reviews, interviews, liner notes, musical analyses, and personal impressions from 1959-1967.

In R&B, Public Enemy’s Chuck D, author Norman Kelley, and other journalists and musicians combine forces to examine how black music has been developed, marketed, and distributed within the structure of American capitalism. The anthology dissects contemporary trends in the music industry, and explores how blacks have historically interacted with the business as artists, business-people, and consumers."

Howard Pitsch, author of Fort Greene

A former Fort Greene Association president, Howard Pitsch has lived in Fort Greene for nearly 30 years. He brings both his first-hand knowledge of the neighborhood and his extensive research to this pictorial history of the neighborhood, from the pre-Revolutionary War era to the present.

Howard will discuss the neighborhood’s history and character this evening with an interviewer from the Fort Greene Association, which was formed in 1973 to preserve the distinctive architectural heritage of the neighborhood but has since evolved to address many of the broader concerns of our diverse community.

"What is the relationship between Hip Hop aesthetics and Black cultural resistance to oppression? Does Hip Hop still have any revolutionary potential? Has it ever? What is a Hip Hop intellectual? What does it mean Hip Hop eMCees function as the critical conscience of a socially oppressed and racially marginalized community? Is there evidence in Hip Hop culture of potentialities for a redemptive Black manhood which could be channeled into human liberation praxis?

In this confrontational and philosophical work of social critique and cultural commentary, A. Shahid Stover ignites a series of explosive critical interrogations which explore a tense unity of Hip Hop aesthetics and radical social theory. Written with the compelling audacity of a young iconoclast, Stover challenges the reader with an elevated critical discourse which remains diligently grounded and ever relevant to “the streets of a world in structural transition, spiritual alienation, socio-political upheaval and intellectual revolt.”

In 1954, white Harvard graduate Pete Beveridge, already on the government's radar as a suspected Communist, married an African American woman from Harlem. His wife, Hortense 'Tee' Beveridge*, was one of the early founders of the Pratt Area Community Council and a beloved fixture in Fort Greene until her death. Pete tells the story of their life together and of an era of profound change in his book Domestic Diversity and Other Subversive Activities. PACC and Greenlight host a reading and reception for Pete this evening; join us to discuss changes in racial attitudes in the last 60 years and to pay homage to Fort Greene’s own Tee Beveridge.

Chang launches the project this evening with a reading by the students of Fort Greene’s own Ronald Edmonds Learning Center (MS 113), who have been working with her on their own poems this month. Nelson George is the award-winning author of Hip Hop America (1998) as well as other books and films on popular culture, and was a long-time music critic with Billboard and The Village Voice. In City Kid, he writes about his coming-of-age right here in Fort Greene and elsewhere, encompassing family stories, cultural analysis, and his literary and musical influences. George talks about his story and his neighborhood tonight with his friend, fellow Fort Greene resident and music and culture critic Touré.
