"At the Brooklyn Museum's Target First Saturdays, thousands of visitors enjoy free programs of art and entertainment each month from 5 to 11 p.m. All evening long, the Museum Café serves a wide selection of sandwiches, salads, and beverages, and a cash bar offers wine and beer. Parking is a flat rate of $4 starting at 5 p.m. All other Saturdays, the Museum closes at 6 p.m."

Peniel Guerrier and Tamboula dance troupe, presented in conjunction with Haiti Cultural Exchange.

Music: 5–7 p.m.
La Troupe Makandal uses Haitian drumming to represent Haiti’s history and culture.

Film: 6–7:30 p.m.
Poto Mitan: Haitian Women, Pillars of the Global Economy (Renée Bergan and Mark Schuller, 2009, 50 min., NR). Documentary about the lives and struggles of Haitian women workers. Co-director Renée Bergan introduces the film and answers questions after the screening. Free tickets (30) are available at the Visitor Center at 5 p.m.

Master drummer Frisner Augustin of La Troupe Makandal leads a drum circle. Bring your drum!

The music of Haiti has served multiple life-affirming tasks for its people: revelry, resilience, and resistance. Emeline Michel, known on the island as the First Lady of Haitian Song, gathers several star performers for a celebration that’s as much about artistic solidarity as it is about spiritual healing. In the hands of troubadours BélO and Beethova Obas, heated rhythms become smoothly mellifluous, while the all-woman troupe Zili Misik forges a Creolized connection between Haiti’s ancestral mizik rasin and other New World styles like jazz, reggae, Afro-Cuban son, and samba. Peniel Guerrier and the Mikerline Dance Company serve as ambassadors of Haitian culture through masterful traditional dance.

Nona Hendryx has been a maverick at every stage of her shape-shifting career, from early days with girlgroup The Bluebelles to scoring hits as a co-founder of black rock/funk superstars Labelle to charming the underground with her raucous ingenuity and songwriting prowess. Featuring choreography by Nicholas Leichter, and an adapted score by Monstah Black with added selections, The Whiz is a fierce, full-spectrum original show of song, dance, and theatrical extravaganza. Ease on down the road to recession, and back from the brink of fantasy, in this remix of The Wizard of Oz for the Obama generation.

Wednesday, August 4 at 7:30pm: Robert Glasper Experiment with Q-Tip, Bilal, and Jose James' Blackmagic @ Damrosch Park Bandshell

Brilliant keyboardist Robert Glasper is on a mission to bring jazz to the masses by infusing it with chordal dynamism and beat consciousness. His band, the Experiment, is as comfortable swinging hot bebop riffs as it is laying down the funk for this evening’s superstar guests, hip-hop philosopher MC Q-Tip and neo-soul singer Bilal. Vocal powerhouse José James’ rich baritone retains the sparkle of jazz traditionalism even as it charms revelers on the dance-club circuit.

"Summer On the Hudson (SOH), one of New York City’s largest free summer festivals, now in its Tenth Anniversary Season, goes into high gear in July at Riverside Park South with Movies Under the Stars, the Children’s Performance Series, the pop-music Acoustic Sundays, and sports and recreation for the whole family. The six-month series, running through October 10, is an annual summer arts and cultural festival in Riverside Park South, West 59th Street to West 72nd Street at the Hudson River, presented by The New York City Department of Parks & Recreation.

The 2010 Festival once again features a wealth of free events for the entire family. This year’s Movies Under the Stars (July 7-August 11) are themed Tall Tales, and include the larger-than-life Pan’s Labyrinth, Stranger Than Fiction and Neverending Story; the Sunday evening Acoustic Sundays (July 11-August 15,) features the SOH debuts of Grammy-nominated Michael Powers Frequency and Meta and the Cornerstones’ African pop and reggae; the Children’s Performance Series, Thursday mornings July 8 to August 12, entertains with Improv4Kids, Robbi K, Bindlestiff’s Swashbuckling Cirkus and much more. Sundays June 20/27: Summer Streets Fest on Vanderbilt Ave

On Sundays June 20th and 27th from 10:30 am to 5:00 pm, Vanderbilt Avenue between Park Place and Dean Street will be car-free for Summer Streets, with outdoor dining, live music, & fun! Restaurants will flood into the street for complimentary cuisine and outdoor dining. Whether pintsized, or of pint drinking age, there will be attractions for all.

Saturday, June 12: Hip-Hop Block Party : Red Hook

"Looking for something somewhat wholesome to do? Children and families of all ages are invited to dance in a cipher, watch performances and picnic on the grass at Dancing in the Streets’ 4th annual block party in Red Hook’s Coffey Park.

The annual event celebrates the next generation of hip hop artists, featuring performances by NYC youth. Performers will include the Red Hook All Stars: Grand X-Plosion, Picture Perfect, Donovan Ross, and Serious Bizness and Rap Right from the Beacon; Garrett Wilson and students from Albee Studios in Carroll Gardens and Brooklyn’s Urban Assembly School of Music and Art; as well as youth from Queens and the Bronx."
