Lia Gladstone spent 2009 teaching literature and drama in Kabul. Join her for “Teaching in a War Zone: A Year in Afghanistan,” in which she presents photographs and narrates her experiences. Gladstone provides commentary on the lives of her students and of Afghan women engaged in cultural creation and resistance in everyday life.

Join Jocelyn Perry for a screening and discussion of “Haiti: The Struggle of Humanity,” in which she interviews children in a Haitian orphanage (built by her grandparents’ congregation) about their hopes for the future. Perry is a member of Middle Collegiate Church and has traveled to Iraq and Palestine/Israel with Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT).

Please join writer Kimberly Shelby-Szyszko and six talented performers for a seamless program of three short plays drawn from songs and poetry of the era, including works by Gwendolyn Bennett, Angelina Weld Grimke, Langston Hughes, Duke Ellington, George Gershwin. Grimke was the first black women to have a play produced in New York."

Joy Ladin’s book “Transmigration” explores journeys: of the self from one gender to another, of the soul to the flesh, of a marriage into and out of love. Ladin first shared these poems at this reading series while these journeys were being undertaken. Yuko Otomo writes in English and Japanese and her poems are direct in essence and simple in form. After 12 years of accumulating evidence about the murder of Tupac Shakur, John Potash put it all together and published the book “The FBI War on Tupac Shakur and Black Leaders,” a volume filled with details gleaned from CIA and FBI documents, court transcripts, and over 100 interviews. And now, he’s taken this work and released a film. Please join Potash for a screening and discussion of the film “The FBI War on Tupac Shakur and Black Leaders.”
