GREAT JAZZ ON THE GREAT HILL RETURNS TO CENTRAL PARK ON JULY 10
Festival-Style Concert Is Part of Jazzmobile’s Summerfest

NEW YORK (June 28, 2010)—New York metropolitan area jazz buffs and nature lovers alike will descend on Central Park on Saturday, July 10 for “Great Jazz on the Great Hill.” The free concert returns with legendary saxophonist Jimmy Heath, Latin jazz percussionist Ray Mantilla and Dion Parson’s 21st Century Band, joined by 2009 Jazzmobile Vocal Competition winner Brianna Thomas. The show, which takes place from 2 to 5 pm, is a co-presentation of Jazzmobile and the Central Park Conservancy. Great Jazz on the Great Hill is made possible by major support from the New York State Council on the Arts, New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and lead corporate sponsor JPMorgan Chase.

Talent includes one of the legendary Heath brothers, who has performed around the world with nearly all of the jazz greats of the last 50 years, from Howard McGhee, Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis to Wynton Marsalis; Ray Mantilla, whose career has included membership in many legendary jazz and Latin jazz ensembles, including the percussion ensemble M'Boom with Max Roach; and Dion Parson, an integral part of New York City’s jazz scene, who draws on musical influences as diverse as classical, reggae, calypso, African and pop music. The bill is rounded out by Brianna Thomas, 2009 winner of Jazzmobile’s Vocal Competition, whose appearances have included the Montreux, North Sea and Umbria Jazz Festivals, as well as a guest appearance at the Kennedy Center with the Barber Brothers.

From 1 to 2 pm, muralist Emmett Wigglesworth will lead a free Mural-Making Art Workshop in The Peter Jay Sharp Children's Glade; children will collaborate to create a large mural that will serve as the backdrop for the stage. Great food will be available for purchase from Spoonbread Too Restaurant and Greenmarket farmers. Blankets, lawn chairs and coolers are welcome.
