Teen Poetry Slam Champs: Showcase and Fundraiser

This summer, the teen poets representing Urban Word NYC took the national title at the Brave New Voices International Teen Poetry Slam in Los Angeles. The event was hosted by rapper Common and actor Rosario Dawson, and filmed for an HBO special in front of an audience of thousands.

On WED. AUG. 11, from 6-8PM, The Point CDC in the Bronx will host a celebration and showcase of these award-winning poets. Furthermore, funds raised from the event will help support Urban Word NYC free after school writing and college prep workshops at The Point. You will be entertained, encouraged, and inspired, so seize this opportunity to help us create opportunities!!!

Bassey is a Nigerian born poet/writer who has been a featured cast member of the National Touring Company of the Tony Award winning Broadway show, Russell Simmon's Def Poetry Jam. This summer Bassey will intertwine her poetry with an evening filled with a live panel, discussing everything from pop culture, politics and relationships. Not only will her show be live streamed via several social networks, but the panel will also field questions from the audience and interact with followers on Twitter.

The series has actually won the national poetry slam championship a record THREE TIMES (1997, 2000, 2002).

"Renowned poet and educator, Nikki Giovanni, admired for her honesty and strength, is recognized the world over as being a poet of both social and self growth. The two act play, scripted and directed by Darryl Lacy, offers a glimpse into how the poet lives as a poet. As an influential force in the oral poetry moment in black culture, Nikki Giovanni’s words are theatre. Michelle Robinson plays the lead in this revival of the original 1990 production. Rounding out the cast is Larry D. Hylton, Lauren Monroe, Howard Oree, and Michelle Biggins, who originated the lead part in the 1990 production. She is reunited with Darryl Lacy who directed this revival and the original production twenty years ago."
